August 2008

We’re wrapping up our first two weeks on campus and it’s been crazy! We’ve been busier than we ever have been before. It’s been pretty difficult trying to connect with returning students, meeting and building with new students, setting up life groups, and then all the craziness of administration. All that said, I’m encouraged. I don’t think I’ve ever been so encouraged about the direction and state of our ministry.

Our students have been stepping up like never before and taking initiative and running. We’ve got an intense semester ahead of us and they’ve been rising to the occasion. We’ve connected with quite a few new students already and I’m excited to see where God takes all of us.

On top of that we’ve been praying about getting some sound equipment to meet with our vision to expand and become a little more professional in our bigger meetings (which will happen once a month). Not only did God provide, He provided in a bigger way than expected. Our campus ministry was given a VERY nice sound system that’s very portable and needs nothing additional. We literally have to buy nothing! So excited about that and to see God move in MORE than expected ways! That always makes me feel special when God goes beyond my expectations. He loves me THAT much!!!

And after all that, Jess and I will be celebrating our 1 year anniversary this weekend! Specifically monday. Can’t believe it’s already been a year!!! To celebrate we’ll be heading north into the Blue Ridge Mountains where we’ll be hangin’ with the Chen’s for a few days. Always great to hang with the Chens. They’re such an awesome couple.

Anyway, it’s been a challenging but encouraging two weeks. More to come as we keep pressing forward…

Well, just wanted to show how exciting this book give-a-way was. Shortly after announcing that Sarah Small had won the book she went into labor. I knew it was exciting, but, I had know idea it was exciting enough to induce labor!!!

Congrats Jeremy and Sarah!!!

Alright, I know you’ve all been sitting by your computers all day long anxiously awaiting the results of the give-a-way for ‘Wild Goose Chase’. Well, I have it right here. The results. Who won? Who will be taking home the prize?

Well, first I’d like to say I was surprised at the # of responses. Thanks to all who read the review. If you didn’t win, I still want to encourage you to go out and get ahold of this book. It’s inspiring and encouraging. Again, for more read the review…

Anyway though, on to what you’ve all been dying to know…

And the winner of this book is…

Sarah Small!!!

Congrats Sarah! You won’t be disappointed!

I recently had the privilege of reading and reviewing Mark Batterson’s newest book that comes out tomorrow called ‘Wild Goose Chase’. Before I get to the book itself, let me just say, I had big expectations for this book. I’ve read his previous book called ‘In A Pit With A Lion On A Snowy Day’ and loved it. I’ve been following Mark ever since then either through conferences, podcasts, or his blog which you can read here (or by pasting http://www.markbatterson.com into your browser) One of the reasons I loved it is because Mark writes not just out of revelation of God and his purposes but out of practice of those revelations and purposes. I very much appreciate that.

All that to say, my big expectations were met and I was challenged more than I honestly thought I would be.

I know this is a long post but keep reading to find out how you can win a free copy of ‘Wild Goose Chase’!!!

This isn’t just another book about living the life you could be living and making you feel good about yourself. Rather it is a book that asks the question, why wouldn’t you live the life you could be living? Why wouldn’t you pursue God and engage in one of the greatest adventures that life could offer? We can only experience this life and adventure if we will emerge from the cages that so easily hold us back and step into the wild frontier that God has laid before us.

In the book Mark addresses six cages that hold us back from pursuing the God call inside each of us. These cages can even be places that seemingly feel safe and secure, but will ultimately hold us back from the God size destinies we have. Personally, I was challenged and convicted as I read through the book. I was challenged to take action on desires and dreams I’ve had but never pursued for various reasons. Maybe it’s fear, maybe it’s feeling unqualified, or maybe it’s impressions that other people have given. Whatever the reason, Mark doesn’t just give reasons to overcome, he launches you past them to the point of no excuse. Again, why would you not live the life you could be living? God has so much more. Uncage your vision for life!

If you read his previous book, you know what a great book it was. Challenging, inspiring, relatable, exciting. This book is no different. It gives such great principles and encouragement to launch you forward in your walk, adventure, and destiny with God. If you haven’t read his previous book you’ll want to after reading this one.

It’s a quick read with eternal consequences and I highly recommend purchasing the book, reading the book, and then purchasing another copy to give to someone else. I gave away quite a few copies of ‘In A Pit With A Lion On A Snowy Day’ and still hear back from people thanking me for giving them such an instrumental book in their lives.

With that said, I get to GIVE AWAY A COPY OF ‘WILD GOOSE CHASE’ as well!!! One of the privileges of reviewing the book is that I received a copy to give away. I’m so stoked about that because it’s a book that everyone should get ahold of. Here’s how it’ll work. Either 1) email me your name and email address (daniel.gilland@gmail.com) or 2) post a comment with your name and email address. I’ll be putting the list in a randomizer and whoever comes out on top gets the book. I’ll do the drawing tomorrow (Tuesday) night and posting the winner here as well as emailing them to let them know and arrange delivery.

Don’t wait to see if you win the book though. Go ahead and purchase the book through Amazon. Then, if you win the book you already have one to give away to someone else.

You can find out more about the book at:

www.chasethegoose.com

From there you can read a summary of the book, learn more about Mark, learn more about setting life goals, and even read a sample chapter.

Happy hunting the wild goose!

I’m currently reading and reviewing Mark Batterson’s new book ‘Wild Goose Chase’. More on that tomorrow when I post a review and give one away…

Anyway, here’s a quick quote from the book that made me think of a current event…

“…any one of us can make the news. Just do something stupid.”

This story made me think of that…

I was introduced earlier this summer to a new web tool called Sproutbuilder. Since then I’ve used Sproutbuilder to build both:

www.encmatl.com

and www.danielgilland.com.

I also noticed that the David Crowder Band has used it in various forms as well.

I’ve been loving it. Very cool stuff and very functional. If you’re doing web stuff, especially if you’re promoting something on the web this is an awesome tool to check out. It helps to simplify things. The whole idea is that you can create a web page without actually leaving the first page you navigated to. You also embed the sprout into any site (and multiple sites if you want) and then every time you update it in sprout builder your ‘sprouts’ update wherever they are. You never have to re-embed them again. Cool concept.

Anyway, I think it’s some pretty awesome stuff. Check out sproutbuilder when you get the chance…

I just read an article on Fox News about a Hamas leaders son that converted to Christianity and is publicly talking about it. He left his family and home because he can’t pursue Christianity there. Lots of personal sacrifice to follow the cross. It’s a great article and has a lot of great points. Read the article here followed by a few high points for me:

Son of Hamas Leader Turns his Back on Islam and Embraces Christianity

Talking about why Christians can’t really go and share Jesus with Muslims but why he can:

“They put Christians on the enemy list anyway, before you talk to them about Islam. So if you go to them and tell them, as a Christian, they will be offended immediately and they will hate you and this will definitely increase the vacuum between both religions — but what made someone like me change?

Years ago, years ago, when I was there, God opened my eyes, my mind also, and I became a completely different person. So now, I can do this duty, while you as Christians can help me do it, but maybe you wouldn’t be able to. (Muslims) have no excuse now.”

Here he again talks about how he can impact the world with Christianity:

“So, I had to be strong about that. That was very challenging. That was the most difficult decision in my life and I didn’t do it for fun. I didn’t do it for anything from this world. I did it only for one reason: I believed in it. People are suffering every day because of wrong ideas. I can help them get out of this endless circle … the track the devil (laid) for them.”

On his family:

“I pray for (my father), all my brothers and my sisters here in this church, praying all the time for them — ‘God, open their eyes, their minds, to come to Christ. And bless them because they had to carry this cross with me.'”

Really good stuff. He talks about the Israeli Palestinian conflict in a way that every politician and American needs to hear and talks about his relationship with God and how someone can take his life but not his soul and that if someone tries to kill him because of his beliefs God will give him strength. The world needs forgiveness and grace. Really great stuff. May God bless him and enable him to take this message where it needs to go most!
